Kopint-Tárki Institute for Economic Research Co. was founded on March 1, 2007 by the research team of Kopint Datorg with a decades-long standing in economic research, the KOPINT Foundation for Economic Research, the empirical social research centre TÁRKI Co. and several private individuals. The research team of the new institute seceded from Kopint-Datorg, whose legal predecessor was the Institute for Economy and Market Research (Kopint) founded in 1964.
The joint venture with Tárki rests on the premise that bringing economic and social research together creates a complex profile that is for the moment missing from the Hungarian spectrum. In our activity we strive to safeguard the critical spirit and independent thinking which has always characterized the research undertaken by Kopint, and which enabled it to produce results of significant quality on both national and international level.
The main mission of the Institute is to stand out as a reliable source of balanced, independent and objective analysis, a long-standing feature of the research activity of Kopint. With its 12 full-time or associate researchers, Kopint-Tárki is one of the leading Hungarian economic research institutes, providing economic analyses and forecast both in Hungarian and English in its regular reports, occasional papers and a wide range of research projects. Research by Kopint-Tárki has covered essentially all sectors and dimensions of the Hungarian and global economy in past decades. In recent years, the development and impacts of Global Value Chains became one of the focus of research of the institute.
An important trait particular to our Institute has been that its studies combine theoretical background with an empirical, hands-on approach, which means that while our analyses stand on solid theoretical and methodological foundations, they also provide viable decision-making options to our partners.
Kopint-Tárki researchers regularly give lectures, teach courses at several universities, and they have authored numerous articles in Hungarian and international publications, books and book chapters, available nationally or internationally. They have high level of statistical, econometrical and model building experience – the models created at our institute proved themselves several times in comparison with models from other expert teams. This is reflected by the fact that Kopint-Tárki has been regularly among the top finalists in the forecasting competition jointly organized by the NBH and Reuters, since 2013, and it got the highest rank in 2016.
Kopint-Tárki is deeply involved in the international research community. It has been a member of AIECE (Association of European Conjuncture Institutes) since 1968, and has acted as the Hungarian partner of the World Economic Forum (WEF) for about 20 years. Since 2018, Kopint-Tárki has been the Hungarian correspondent of Eurofound (European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions).
Kopint-Tárki has participated in many international projects – primarily in research projects under the aegis of the European Union, but USAID, UNCTAD and UNICEF has been among its partners as well.
Kopint-Tárki cooperates closely with the Kopint Foundation for Economic Research founded in 1991, which likewise participates in various Hungarian and international research projects. The foundation is the publisher of the journal Külgazdaság [Foreign Economy] as well as numerous specialised publications, carrying on educational activity and support, also providing grants to young economists.
